Women and Transgender Night

Thank You for your interest in WOMEN AND TRANSGENDER NIGHT at Sibley!

Last year we wrenched our way through our 3rd year as a core program at Sibley. Our commitment to women-identified folks in the community is centered around delineating specialized skills often denied to women.

The purpose is to address the difficult, and sometimes shaming, experience of walking into bike shops with the hopes of finding a solution to that flat tire or squeaky wheel without feeling intimidated.

Last year, Women and Transgender Night hosted its First Annual Pride Bike Night! Our doors opened for one night only during Pride Week to the entire GLBT community.

This year we are partnering with TRANS YOUTH SUPPORT NETWORK for Pride Bike Night @ Sibley. This is W&Ts opportunity to sponsor a community event with TYSN at the forefront.

Please Join us to celebrate our diversity, work with female mechanics, listen to music, enjoy dropping wrenches and get a Sugar Rush from our favorite dounut shop located at The Globe.

Hours:

Tuesdays, 6:30pm - 9:00pm

"We offer safe hours for women and trans people who are traditionally marginalized in the bike world. No matter what your level of experience, we welcome you to come work on your own bike, help others, or volunteer time for Sibley.

Experienced female mechanics will be here to help you with everything from fixing a flat to overhauling your whole bike!"

Peace,

Ashanti

W&T in the Community:

Dear Maddy, Ellie, Zara, Luci, Vivika and Marley

And also Ashanti & the crew at the Sibley Bike Depot!

I wanted to send you this photo so you could see how what
you do has a real impact on the world around you.

This spring all the Ovature Girls took part in a bike
maintenance project at the Sibley Bike Depot where the girls learned a lot about
bike repair. Some of the girls also repaired 2 bikes for the bike donation
program at Sibley – and we had a lot of fun!   However we ran
into trouble scheduling a time to finish the project, so at one of the group
overnights the girls repaired three older children’s bikes that were
taking up space I my garage.  They cleaned and painted one bike with a
rusted frame, repaired a couple of flats, cleaned and lubed the chains on all
the bikes, and replaced worn out tires on another bike.

One of these bikes is in the attached photo, being ridden by
the bike’s new owner Guadalupe, age 8, at the MiracleKids
Triathlon.   MiracleKids is great event where youth swim, bike and
run to raise money for kids who can’t; kids who’s  ability to
be active is limited by cancer.   You all taking a couple of hours to
repair this bike gave Guadalupe the chance to race on behalf of a girl
struggling with cancer.  Is that cool or what?

Thanks to your hard work one girl who did not have bike to
compete in this event got  the bike she needed to be in the race.
With donations from Sibley, six other bikes  also reached youth at the
YWCA who wanted to compete, but didn’t have bikes.  Overall 14 youth
completed their first triathlon because every one of you stepped forward in
large and small ways, did your part and helped out.

It  just goes to show that you never know how far a few
hours of volunteer work can go.

And BTW, if any of you think you might want to do MiracleKids,
there is a second race on August 15 at Lake Ann!

Thank you deeply,
