The Earn-a-Bike program is designed to provide people with a bike at no cost, while also offering an educational experience. With our newly redesigned program, participants in the Earn-a-Bike program gain valuable skills and become more connected with Cycles for Change. They can work better as volunteers while completing the program as well as afterward as they continue to be involved. In order to complete the program, participants must:

• Begin the program by attending a 2 hour New Volunteer Orientation (every third Saturday from 10-12; contact Micah to sign up)
Attend two additional Earn-a-Bike classes (also Saturdays from 10-12), or other adult classes if there is a scheduling conflict
Work for a total of 6 hours doing shop organization during volunteer nights
Work additional hours in shop organization, bike repair, or staffing open shop shifts for a grand
total of 12 hours.

Log all of their EAB hours into the volunteer tracking system.

After completing the orientation, classes and shop organization (10 hrs), participants may pick out a
bike from Cycles for Change’s back room storage area.
Bikes that have already been worked on, or that are fixed on the sales floor, are off limits for the
EAB program. Additionally, staff and Board reserve the right to turn down high quality bikes
that need to be fixed for retail sales.

EAB participants may begin working on their bike during Open Shop hours at this point. Those
hours DO NOT count toward the 20 needed.

No new parts are allowed on EAB bikes, with the exception of brake pads and cables/housing with Board/staff approval.

One lock per year (retail under $25) may be earned in the EAB program - only for bikes
that are earned
.
EAB participants may access one time discounts (wholesale cost +25%) to purchase select
items and accessories to install on their EAB bike while it's being fixed up, including:
Lights, rack, fenders, tires, tubes, grips, bar tape

We also offer work-trade for parts. If you need a part for your bicycle you may work at tasks in the shop for $7 an hour in credit. In this way, people can get the parts they need without having to use money while simultaneously helping Cycles for Change get bikes fixed and stay clean and organized!

If you are interested in participating the Earn-a-Bike Program, please stop by the shop or contact Micah.
